Mustangs Shake Off Slow Start, Post 20th Win

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Stevenson University women's volleyball team shook off a first-set setback to post its 20th victory of the season, besting Catholic University 3-1 at Franny Murray Court Thursday night.  Set scores were 20-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-16.

  • Catholic (14-11) scored four straight points to open up a 12-7 lead.
  • Back-to-back kills by Victoria Prokic and Simone Gest pulled Stevenson (20-0) within three, before the Cardinals scored the next three points to go up 15-9.
  • After a Catholic service error, the Cardinals scored the next four points to extend the lead to 19-10.
  • Trailing 24-16, the Mustangs scored four straight points capped by a Katie Leftridge kill, but a Patricia Martinez kill for the hosts ended the set.

  • The second set featured 14 ties.
  • With the set tied 22-22, a Mackenzie Blevins kill, followed by a Cardinal setting error, gave the Mustangs a lead and serving for set point.
  • Catholic registered a kill on the next point to pull within 24-23, but a Haley Hoover kill closed it out and tied the match 1-1.

  • Stevenson broke a 9-9 tie with four straight points to build a 13-9 lead on a Caroline Dangel service ace.
  • The Mustangs extended the lead to 16-10 on back-to-back kills by Dangel and Leftridge.
  • A 5-0 spurt for the visitors gave them a 23-15 lead following a Leftridge service ace.
  • Shannon Baily closed out the set with a kill to give Stevenson a 2-1 lead.

  • Stevenson raced out to a 9-3 lead in the fourth, with Hoover notching a block for the ninth point.
  • Another block, this one by Prokic, capped a 6-1 run as the Mustangs took control with a 15-4 lead.
  • Gest closed out the match with her 11th kill of the night.

  • Stevenson remains one of three unbeaten teams nationally along with Johns Hopkins (18-0) and Tufts (14-0).
  • The Mustangs reached the 20-win mark for the 10th straight season and the 12th time in head coach Dave Trumbo's 13 years.
  • Stevenson's 20-0 start is the second-best in program history, with the 2013 team winning its first 23 matches.
  • The guests hit .212 on the evening, while Catholic hit .064.
  • Leftridge finished with 15 kills and 12 digs for her seventh double-double of the season.
  • Leftridge has 969 career kills and is 31 away from becoming the seventh member of the program's 1,000 kill club.
  • Gest had 11 kills on .417 hitting, her fifth double-digit kill total of the season.
  • Prokic had nine kills, while Baily, Hoover and Blevins had seven apiece.
  • Hoover also finished with eight total blocks (three solo, five assists).
  • Darian Hileman had a season-best 20 digs.
  • Dangel had 25 assists and nine digs, while Julie Nightwine handed out 22 assists.

  • Stevenson faces a pair of Centennial Conference opponents in a tri-match Saturday, facing Haverford at 3 pm and host Gettysburg at 5 pm.
  • The Mustangs return home and to MAC Commonwealth play Tuesday, entertaining Widener in a 7 pm match at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
