BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Stevenson men's track and field team, who are looking to defend last year's indoor conference title, sit in second place after opening day of the MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Lehigh University. The Mustangs trail Widener by just one point, but will have plenty of opportunities to pick up points on the second and final day of the meet.
The Mustangs were dominant in the 60m dash preliminaries, taking five of the eight spots for Saturday's final. Sophomore Dereck Davis, who currently has the top time in the conference this season (6.90), took the first qualifying spot with a time of 6.95 (6.942) seconds. Senior Kendall Belser finished an eyelash behind Davis with a personal-best time of 6.95 (6.947) to qualify second. Seniors Malcolm Hayward and Morgan Cheatham qualified fourth (7.09) and fifth (7.12), while sophomore Clement Onyebadi took the eighth and final qualifying spot with a 7.18.
Sophomore Ritchie Case, who won three of Friday's four events in the heptathlon, leads the field with 2709 points. Case took first overall in the 60m (7.22), long jump (6.55m) and shot put (11.49m), while taking second in the high jump (1.79m). Outside of the heptathlon, Case took sixth overall in the long jump finals with a top jump of 6.49m. Case would also qualify for Saturday's 60m hurdle final after clocking a personal-best time of 9.07 seconds.
In the 4x200m relay, Davis, Cheatham, Belser and senior Josh Mitchell picked up second overall and a spot on the All-MAC Second team after clocking a combined time of 1:32.34. The Distance Medley Relay team of junior Iddriss Iddriss, freshman Glen Turner, sophomore Sean Dodson and junior Nikita Kulick placed fifth overall in the event with a time of 10:30.42.
Junior Patrick Watson picked up eight points for the Mustangs after taking second in the 5000 with a 15:03.57, which earned him second team honors. Senior Langston Gash clocked a 15:31.02 to take seventh.
Senior Forrest Allen placed fourth overall in the weight throw after his personal-best toss of 14.44m.
The Mustangs will look to repeat as MAC Indoor Champions when the meet resumes on Saturday, February 23.
