Mustangs Down Notre Dame (Md.) in Home Finale

STEVENSON, Md. - Stevenson women's volleyball freshman Avery Gabbard (Arnold/Broadneck) and junior Alex Mercer (Eldersburg/Liberty) combined for 25 of the team's 38 kills as the Mustangs swept a non-conference game with Notre Dame (Md.) for the second time this season, winning 25-9, 25-11, 25-21 Wednesday night at Student Union Gymnasium.
The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Mustangs (11-16) and also snapped a two-game skid at home.
Gabbard had 13 kills and Mercer added 12 as the duo totaled just one error in a combined 41 attempts for a .585 hitting percentage.
As a team, Stevenson committed just five errors in 83 attempts for a .398 hitting percentage.
Meanwhile, the Gators (4-17) had 21 errors on 81 attempts with only 24 kills for an .037 percentage.
Sophomore Alexa Carney (Towson/Towson) totaled a team-high eight digs while freshman Emilee Ceroy (Davidsonville/South River) had six. Carney also had two kills after moving from libero to the outside where she totaled 86 kills last season.
Sophomore Amy Rudolph (North East/Rising Sun) had 30 assists to go along with four digs and junior Dani Katsampis (New Windsor/Francis Scott Key) had five kills and six digs.
All 12 players in uniform for Stevenson saw action Wednesday night, including freshman Carla Simms (Suitland/Forestville) who tied her career-high with two digs.
The Mustangs concludes their 2009 regular season with six consecutive road games starting on Saturday with a tri-match at St. Mary's (Md.) beginning at 10:00 a.m.
