Stevenson Chases Three CAC Championships on Saturday

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - On Saturday, the Stevenson men's soccer, women's soccer and women's cross country teams, as well as three men's cross country runners, will be competing for a chance to win the school's first CAC championship since the Mustangs joined the conference in 2007.
The women's soccer team will be hosting Mary Washington at Caves Athletics Complex beginning at 2:00 p.m., while the men's team will travel to York (Pa.) for a 2:00 p.m., contest at Graham Field. Live stats and live video for the women's game can be found here and here, respectively, and live stats for the men's game can be accessed here.
Earlier in the day, the women's cross country team will be looking for its first-ever conference title as the Mustangs compete in the 2009 CAC Cross Country Championships at Heritage Park in Walkersville. Three runners from the men's team will also be looking for an individual title.
The women's championship race begins at 11 a.m., followed by the men's chase at noon.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
The CAC Women's Soccer Championship will pit fourth-seeded Mary Washington (12-4-4) at second-seeded Stevenson (14-4-1). Mary Washington has won 12 CAC titles, the most recent of which came in 2004 that was the last of four-straight.
The regular-season co-champion, Stevenson will play in first CAC title game after having played in two as a member of the NEAC in 2005 and 2006. The Mustangs, who are ranked eighth in the NCAA South Atlantic Region poll, have won a school record 10 consecutive games, but needed overtime to secure a 3-2 victory over Mary Washington on October 24 at home.
Stevenson will also be looking for their third appearance in the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship and first since 2006 as the winner of Saturday's game receives an automatic bid to the tournament.
The Mutangs are just one win shy of the school record for wins in a season set in 2006 and are unbeaten in nine out of 10 home games this season.
In the regular season meeting, Mustang junior Heather Redding (Street/North Harford) scored the game-winner with 1:57 remaining in the first overtime after the Eagles rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game in the 88th minute.
MEN'S SOCCER
The CAC Men's Soccer Championship will also match the fourth-seed against the No. 2 seed as Stevenson (12-8) travels to York (Pa.) (14-1-4). The Mustangs advanced to their first-ever title game with a 1-0 victory on Tuesday at top-seeded and defending champion Salisbury.
The Mustangs will be looking for their school record eighth consecutive win and second in as many games against a team ranked in the top-20 nationally as York (Pa.) enters the game at No. 12 in the latest NSCAA Division III National Poll. The Sea Gulls were ranked at No. 16.
The Spartans will be trying to win their third CAC title in the last five years and fourth since the inception of the CAC in 1991.
In just its third season as a member of the CAC, Stevenson is aiming for its first conference title in the program's 16-year history and also the team's first appearance in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship as the winner gets an automatic bid.
York (Pa.) won the regular season meeting at Stevenson on September 23, 2-1.
Stevenson will get a shot at redemption as it has not beaten the Spartans in the last 11 meetings, posting an 0-9-2 record. The Mustangs' last win came at home back in 1998.
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Stevenson looks to be one of the top-five teams at this year's CAC Cross Country Championships after revamping its roster from a year ago to include three newcomers.
The team's top newcomer is sophomore Julie Bekier (Baltimore/Greater Grace Christian Academy) who has been the team's top finisher in the last five races. Her best 6k time of the season came at the Don Cathcart Invitational back on September 26 in a time of 25:39.
However, she placed seventh among the 42 competitors from the seven CAC schools at the Hood College Open on October 17 at Heritage Park, site of this year's conference championships.
The other top newcomer for the Mustangs is freshman Meghan Najewicz (Baltimore/Perry Hall) who has been the team's second-fastest runner in three of the four races she has competed in this season. Senior Nicole Nash (Leonardtown/Leonardtown) looks to help Stevenson improve upon its fifth-place from a year ago where she placed 30th.
The Mustangs also look for big contributions from senior Brooke Witherow (Berlin/Stephen Decatur) and junior Lauren Redding (Bel Air/C. Milton Wright) each of whom placed in the top-50 at last year's CAC championships.
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Stevenson will be sending three individuals to this year's championship who will be looking to place among the top-15 finishers to earn All-CAC honors.
Freshman Avior Zynda (Woodbine/Century) looks to be the favorite for the Mustangs after having been the team's top finisher in three of its last four races. His second fastest 8k time this season came in his last race on October 17 at the Hood College Open at Heritage Park, site of this year's conference championships. He finished just outside of the top-15 in 16th place with a time of 28:44.37 and was the eighth-place finisher among the seven CAC schools.
Freshman Patrick Cristaldi (Laurel/Atholton) also looks to contend for all-conference honors as he has three top-15 finishes in seven races this season and has been Stevenson's top finisher in four races this season.
The third member of this year's team is junior Josh Michael (Baltimore/Patapsco) who has conference championship experience as he finished 45th at the 2007 CAC Cross Country Championships while competing for York (Pa.). He had one of his best performances of the year in his last race at the Hood Open where placed 24th in a time of 29:37.65, just off of his 8k season-best time of 29:31.
