Mustangs Win in OT, Secure Bye in CAC Championship

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson women's soccer junior Heather Redding (Street/North Harford) scored her sixth goal of the season with just 1:57 remaining in the first overtime to give the Mustangs their eighth-straight win, 3-2 over Mary Washington Saturday afternoon at Caves Athletics Complex.
The victory secured the No. 2 seed and a bye in the first round of next month's CAC Women's Soccer Championship for Stevenson (12-3-1, 7-1 CAC) and tied a school record for most consecutive wins set by the 2006 squad that advanced to the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship.
Redding's game-winner, her second of the season, came after the Eagles' Amy Olson tied the game with just 2:47 left in regulation on her team-leading 11th goal of the season.
Redding scored on a rebound after sophomore Stephanie Eyler (Thurmont/Catoctin) played the ball into the box to freshman Melinda Kane (Baltimore/Mercy) whose shot was saved by Eagle keeper Tina Brehm. The ball then trickled to Brehm's right where Redding knocked it in.
The game was pretty even statistically as the Mustangs held a slim 14-13 edge in shots while Mary Washington had a 3-1 margin in corner kicks.
Eyler scored the only goal of the first half with her CAC-leading 15th of the season in the 22nd minute to give Stevenson a 1-0 halftime lead off an assist from Kane.
Kane would then net her ninth goal in the 50th minute to increase the lead to 2-0.
Katy Generelli would get the Eagles (10-4-3, 3-2-2 CAC) on the board in the 64th minute off a rebound after her initial shot was saved by Mustang freshman Megan Weitzman (Westminster/Winters Mill).
Olson then forced overtime with less than three minutes remaining after scoring on a loose ball that was bobbled by Weitzman in the rain and soggy field conditions.
Weitzman finished with six saves to earn her eighth win in goal while Brehm made five stops in suffering just her fourth loss in 17 games this season.
Stevenson concludes the regular season with a non-conference contest at home against Goucher on Tuesday.
