Schroeder's 16 Saves Lead Mustangs Past McDaniel
OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Freshman Jenny Schroeder (Severna Park/Seton Keough) made 16 saves, one shy of her career-high, including nine in the second half to lead the Stevenson University women's lacrosse team to a 15-11 victory over McDaniel on Senior Day Thursday at Caves Athletics Complex.
The win was a season-high third-straight for the Mustangs (7-5) who improved to 4-3 at home and 4-3 versus non-conference opponents this season.
Schroeder and sophomore Devan Malone (Highland/River Hill) combined for 12 saves in the second half as the duo faced 21 shots. Schroeder's previous career-high was 17 set against Dickinson on March 12.
Junior Lauren Zegowitz (Gaithersburg/Damascus) and sophomore Megan Weiss (Odenton/Seton) each finished with four points to lead Stevenson offensively. Zegowitz's four goals led four Mustangs who had hat tricks as Weiss, junior Kristyna Hnizda (Manchester/North Carroll) and senior Mandi Carr (Crownsville/Old Mill) each had three.
The game was back-and-forth at the start until Hnizda scored the first of three-straight goals for Stevenson to give the team an 8-6 halftime lead.
The Mustangs led by as many as three on three separate ocassions, the last coming at 10-7 following Carr's second goal with 25:22 remaining in the second half.
However, the Green Terror (7-6) would rally with three consecutive goals of their own, including one each from leading scorers Brittany Baer and Jen Stone, to tie the game for the fifth time, 10-10 with 22:42 left.
Carr and Hnizda would put Stevenson back in front by two before Baer netted her 61st of the season to cut the lead to one with just over nine minutes to play.
Weiss would add her final two goals, the last of which came with only 55 seconds remaining, to seal the victory.
Juniors Brittany Connelly (Catonsville/Catonsville) and Brittany Hilton (Barnesville/Poolesville) each scored for Stevenson who overcame 23 turnovers and a minus-8 shot differential.
The Mustangs conclude the regular-season with three-straight road games, beginning on Saturday with a CAC contest at No. 19 St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday at noon.
