King's Home Run Leads Softball to Split With Wesley
OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Freshman Brittany King (Bel Air/Mercy) hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the third to give the Stevenson University softball team a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over Wesley in game two of a CAC doubleheader Tuesday at Weinberg-Fine Stadium.
The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Mustangs (13-15, 2-8 CAC) after they lost the opener, 2-0.
King finished 1-for-2 with three RBIs after entering the game at first in the top of the third. Freshman Brittany Rynkowski (Hampstead/North Carroll) was 3-for-4 while sophomore Kelly Dorsey (Baltimore/Catonsville) went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
After Wesley (4-13, 1-7 CAC) took a 3-1 lead in the top of the second on a three-run double by McKenzie Davis, Dorsey had an RBI single to pull Stevenson within one before King hit her first career home run to give the Mustangs a 5-3 lead.
Freshman Lauren Davis (Mechanicsville/Chopticon) added the game-winning run in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single that scored junior Stacey Rouse (Catonsville/Mount de Sales) who was making her first appearance after missing the last four games due to injury.
The run proved to be important as the Wolverines scored two runs in the top of the fifth to pull within one run before freshman Megan Kunkel (Nottingham/Mount de Sales) ended threat by getting Amanda Coletta to ground into an inning-ending double play.
Kunkel earned her second win in her last two decisions, scattering seven hits over five innings while striking out three.
In the opener, Wesley's Megan Street earned her third win of the season with a complete-game seven-hitter. Her effort was aided by the fact that Stevenson left 10 runners on base and went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
Six different players had a hit for the Mustangs, led by freshman Lisa Bilski (Forest Hill/Fallston) who went 2-for-3.
Sophomore Julianne Roper (Baltimore/Western Tech) struck out seven while allowing seven hits over seven innings, but suffered her third loss in her last three decisions.
Stevenson travels to Mary Washington on Friday for a CAC doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
