STEVENSON, Md. - The third-seeded Stevenson men's tennis team advanced to the ECAC Division III Tennis Championship finals after defeating second-seeded Washington and Jefferson by a 4-1 score in the semifinals at the Greenspring tennis courts. However, the Mustangs would fall to top-seeded Pfeiffer in the championship final.
The Mustangs kicked-off the semifinals by taking each of the first two doubles matches. Sophomore Andre Sturniolo and junior Douglas Vaughan won their 12th-straight match and improved to 12-1 on the year after sweeping their No. 2 doubles opponents, 6-0. Freshman Richie Abruscato and junior Andrew Ryan improved to 8-3 after winning their No. 3 doubles match by a 6-2 score. Sophomore Ray McDermott and senior Wornden Ly led their No. 1 opponents by a score of 5-3, but the match was halted since the Mustangs had already taken two of the three doubles matches. The two victories gave the Mustangs a 1-0 advantage heading into singles play.
Sturniolo won his 16th-straight match by taking down his No. 2 singles opponent in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. The win improved Sturniolo's singles record to 16-1 on the year. Ly picked up his 13th win of the year in a 6-2, 6-4 triumph in No. 3. Vaughan clinched the victory for the Mustangs with a 6-3, 7-5 win in No. 5 singles, giving him his 13th win of the season.
In the championship final, Stevenson got off to a rough start by dropping the first two doubles matches. McDermott and Ly fell in No. 1 by a 6-1 score, while Sturniolo and Vaughan lost their No. 2 match by a 6-3 margin. McDermott and Ly finish their season with a record of 16-11, while Vaughan and Sturniolo end the year with a mark of 12-2.
In singles play, Ryan and Vaughan would drop their No. 4 and No. 5 matches in straight sets. Ryan's season ends with a record of 18-6, while Vaughan finishes with a 13-10 mark. Pfeiffer clinched the championship after Ly fell in his No. 3 match by a 6-0, 6-4 score. Ly ends his senior season with a singles record of 13-9.
The Mustangs, who have made three ECAC Championship appearances in the last four seasons, end the season with a record of 14-7.
