Men's Tennis Opens Season at ITA Southeast Regional
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Stevenson University men's tennis team opened its 2008-09 season by traveling to Mary Washington for the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Championships October 4-5. Despite missing three of its regular starters, the Mustangs put forth a good effort in their respective draws.
The best results came from sophomore Randy Speck (Glen Burnie/Old Mill) who won his opening singles match in the B6 flight against Sal Saraniti of Virginia Wesleyan in three sets before falling eventual finalist Tim Belford of Franklin & Marshall in the next round.
Later in the day, Speck teamed with sophomore Ben Petasky (Baltimore/Pikesville) to get a first round doubles win in B3 by defeating Evan Lowery and Nathan McDowell of Shenendoah, 8-4. The duo fell in the next round to eventual champions JOrdan Blumenthal and Michael Robbins of Muhlenberg.
Freshman Ted Cooke (Snow Hill/Snow Hill) made his first collegiate appearance in the B2 draw, losing in the first round to Spencer Spectov of No. 14 Carnegie Mellon. In his consolation match, Cooke lost to Giorgio Athens of Salisbury, 6-1, 6-3.
Sophomore Kevin Stamm (Leonardtown/Leonardtown) competed in the B4 singles draw and lost his first round match to Bryan Metz of Elizabethtown before dropping his consolation match to Curtis Quant of Salisbury.
Stamm and Cooke teamed up to compete in the B2 doubles flight. They lost their first match to Michael Milanov and Tim Robinson of Shenendoah, 8-5. They came back and defeated Shawn Cotton and Mike Steiner from Elizabethtown 8-4 in the consolation draw before losing to Blake Bonser and David Kaluzavich of King's (Pa.) in the consolation finals.
Stevenson returns to action in the spring when it hosts Baldwin-Wallace at 6:00 p.m.
