STEVENSON, Md. - For the second-straight year, the Stevenson University men's tennis team and head coach Jason Cohen sponsored the Mustang Open at the Greenspring Tennis Courts and for the second consecutive year, a Division I player from Maryland took home the championship.

"This year's tournament was a great success," said Cohen. "There was a great turnout along with some spectacular tennis. I would like to thank all of the participants and people who came out to watch."

Among the other colleges and universities represented were Virginia Tech, Maryland, Lehigh, Delaware, Middlebury, Washington and Lee, Washington (Md.), Mary Washington and Salisbury.

"All the players got some tournament play experience while preparing for their next season," added Cohen. Each school all had players participating along with some very talented adult players."

After two days of play, the semifinals pitted Evan Thomas of Salisbury against Zach Pine from Virginia Tech and Michael Coleman, a graduate from Maryland and current Terrapin assistant coach, against Ryan Lissner of LSU.

Coming into the semifinal, Thomas had already played three, three-set matches and he kept his streak going by defeating Pine 7-6(3), 5-7, 6-4 in a three-hour match.

The other semifinal also went three sets with Coleman winning the first set and Lissner making a comeback to take the second in a dramatic tiebreaker. However, Coleman proved too tough in taking the third and winning the match 6-2, 6-7(10), 6-3.

In the final, Coleman used his relentless baseline game to wear down Thomas in the hot weather and took the win in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

Coleman is the second Division I player to win the Mustang Open after UMBC's David Jackson won the inaugural championship last year.
