A Baltimore native, Plevyak began his coaching career at his alma mater Mount Saint Joseph High School. He led the Gaels to an 81-22-10 record and two MIAA championships during his eight seasons.

After Mount Saint Joseph, Plevyak stepped away from coaching and entered the business world for 11 years before taking over at McDaniel in 1994.
