A win would send the Mustangs (17-1) to the national championship game at Gillete Stadium in Foxboro, Massachussetts next Sunday, May 24, making them the first team in the 15-year history of athletics at Stevenson University to play for a national championship.
Meanwhile, the Bullets (15-3) are making their third-straight appearance in the semifinals and eighth overall. They have won 13 consecutive games since starting the season 2-3 with losses to No. 7 Stevenson, No. 3 Cortland State and No. 14 Haverford.
Gettysburg has a record of 2-5 in the semifinals, advancing to the national championship game in 2001 and 2002. The team is still looking for its first title.
Stevenson is 11-1 at home this season and 20-2 at Caves Athletics Complex over the last two seasons. The team's only losses during that time have come to eight-time national champion and conference rival Salisbury.
Earlier this season, the Mustangs improved to 3-0 with a 16-6 victory over then-No. 2 Gettysburg at home on March 4. Sophomore Jimmy Dailey (Westminster/Winter Hills) totaled a season-high seven points, including a career-high four goals, while junior Richie Ford (Baltimore/Towson) also netted four goals.
Dailey and Ford combined to score four of Stevenson's six first quarter goals as it led 6-2 after one and 10-2 at the half.
Senior Greg Furshman (Miami, Fla./Towson) finished with one goal and one assist while winning 11 of 17 faceoffs and totaling six ground balls.
Sunday will mark the third overall meeting between the Mustangs and Bullets with each team having won on its home field. While Stevenson won the matchup earlier this season, Gettysburg pulled out a 10-9 victory at Musselman Stadium on March 5, 2008 after Zach Pucci scored the game-winning goal with 1:44 left.
Sunday will also mark the third meeting between the Furshman brothers, Greg and Bullet starting goalie Zach Furshman. Greg has totaled two goals and one assist in the previous two games while Zach did not see any action in 2008 and totaled eight saves while allowing 14 goals in 43 minutes this year.
Zach Furshman and Stevenson junior Geoff Hebert (Lutherville/Dulaney) are two of Division III's top goalies as Herbert is ranked fourth in goals against average while Furshman is ninth.
Hebert has totaled 29 saves in the Mustangs' two NCAA championship games, including a career-high 15 in his debut versus Cabrini. Furshman has made 13 saves in the Bullets' two games.
Stevenson is ranked sixth in Division III in scoring defense while Gettysburg is ranked 45th in scoring offense. The Mustangs are also 13th in scoring offense with the Bullets 19th in scoring defense.
During Gettysburg's 13-game win streak, the team has allowed double-digit goals just twice in its 11-10 win at No. 1 Salisbury on March 28 and its 15-10 victory over No. 6 Washington and Lee at home on May 9 in the NCAA second round.
In their previous meeting at Stevenson this season, the Bullets were outscored 6-2 in the first quarter. However, in 18 games this season, Gettysburg has outscored its opponents 74-28 in the opening quarter.
By comparison, the Mustangs have outscored their opponents 66-27 in the first quarter, 134-54 after two and 201-85 after three. Their problem has been the fourth quarter where they have allowed 34 goals and hold just a plus-10 margin.
