Hampstead, MD - The 2008 Capital Athletic Conference Championships were held this weekend at Piney Branch Country Club in Maryland. Villa Julie College hosted the two day event. After finishing in third place on day one, an impressive second day for the Mustangs helped them leapfrog over York College to claim second place in the first CAC Tournament. Senior Steve Watts was the leading Mustang, finished the tournament in second place.
After day one in the 2008 Capital Athletic Conference Golf Tournament, nationally ranked Wesley College led the field, followed closely by York College and Villa Julie College. Wesley's team combined for a score of 317 (+33) giving them a four shot lead over York College (321, +37). Host team Villa Julie rounded out the top three, only seven shots behind the leader with a 324 (+44). Marymount University and Hood College were tied for fourth with a score of 362 (+78). Individually Chris Osberg of Wesley College shot the round of the day with an impressive 75. Breathing down his neck were Villa Julie players Steve Watts and Matt Lukehart who each shot a 76. Michael Rushin of Wesley and Shane Bernard of York round out the top five.
On day two the elements made life difficult for the players. The wind and the rain could not halt Wesley College, as they would finish out champions with a two day score of 632 (+64). A solid display from Villa's players on their home course catapulted them into second place with a score of 653, +85. York College would finish in third, eleven shots behind the Mustangs (664). After being tied on the first day, Marymount University pulled away from Hood College to secure fourth place leaving the Blazers in fifth.
Villa's Steve Watts and Matt Lukehart both earned first team All-Conference honors by finishing in the top five. Watts finished in second place and Lukehart finished in the fourth spot. To cap off a rewarding weekend for the Mustangs, Kevin Motz was named to the All-Conference second team for finishing in ninth, and Coach Chris Ramer was named by his fellow coaches as the CAC Coach of the Year. Wesley's Chris Osberg finished in first place and was named the CAC Player of the Year.
Solid performances from Villa players Cliff Mangle (+32) and James Sciabarrassi (+32) helped secure the second spot for the Mustangs.
