Former McDaniel assistant men's basketball coach Kevin Selby officially joins Stevenson in the same capacity for the 2009-10 season after serving as a volunteer assistant a year ago.
Selby, who was also the Director of Student Academic Support Services at McDaniel, will continue a dual role at Stevenson where he is also the Director of Sophomore and Transfer Experiences.
A native of Deep Creek, Selby brings 16 years of coaching experience to Stevenson, including 12 at McDaniel from 1996-2008 and three at Northern Garrett High School from 1993-96.
While at McDaniel, Selby was responsible for many aspects of the men's basketball program such as perimeter player development, coaching the offense, scheduling, video exchange and scouting. He also served as the director of the annual McDaniel Tip-Off Classic.
One of Selby's biggest impacts at McDaniel came as the team's recruiting coordinator where he specialized in the states of Maryland, Pennsylvania and New York as well as other specific areas and recruits as assigned.
During the 2006-07 season, Selby was named interim head coach following the passing of head coach Bob Flynn. Taking over in January, he led the team to wins in three of its last five games in the Centennial Conference, including a 70-68 victory at then-No. 18 Johns Hopkins. The Green Terror finished the season with 11 wins, the highest among the previous four seasons.
For six years as the Director of Student Academic Support Services at McDaniel, Selby oversaw the overall operation of the academic support services office, including the supervision of 20 staff members, budget management and student advising.
Prior to McDaniel, Selby spent three seasons as the boys basketball head coach at his high school alma mater.
A 1989 graduate of Northern Garrett, Selby played two seasons at Garrett Community College before finishing his college career at Frostburg State where he received a bachelor of science degree in social sciences. He later received a master's in counseling psychology from McDaniel.
Selby is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and is certified in the organization's professional development series. He also has worked numerous camps, including Duke, West Virginia, Penn State and Seton Hall as well as McDaniel.
In the summer of 1999, he served as an assistant coach for a Mid-Atlantic Region Division III Select Team which competed against professional teams in Sweden and Denmark. He did the same in the summer of 2000, accompanying a team to Belgium, Holland and France.
