Mustangs Close Home Schedule With Loss to Salisbury

STEVENSON, Md. - Stevenson University men's basketball sophomore guard Greg Collins (Baltimore/Western Tech) totaled 18 points and nine rebounds, but the Mustangs could not overcome an 11-point halftime deficit in dropping their second-straight at home, 77-66 to Salisbury Saturday on Senior Day at Carolyn Manuszak Student Union Gymnasium.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Sea Gulls (10-13, 7-7 CAC) and moved them into a tie for fourth place in the CAC with Marymount (Va.). With one more win, both teams can clinch two of the final three spots in the CAC Men's Basketball Championship.
Meanwhile, Stevenson (6-17, 5-9 CAC) fell into a tie for the sixth and final spot in the conference tournament with Hood and York (Pa.) with two games remaining.
The Mustangs shot made just 7-of-29 attempts from the floor in the first half in falling behing 33-22 at halftime. Salisbury scored 18 of their 33 points in the paint and held a 25-19 edge in rebounding.
The Sea Gulls led by as many as 17 in the second half before a 10-2 run by Stevenson cut its deficit to nine with 4:13 remaining.
However, back-to-back baskets by Salisbury pushed the lead to 13 with 1:26 left and the Sea Gulls finished the game 9-for-10 from the free throw line to win by 11.
Senior center Kerry Dugan (Sparks/Hereford) totaled 12 points and eight rebounds in his final home game while senior guard Darryl Fleming (Oxon Hill/Jericho) had seven points in just eight minutes.
Senior guard Chaise Lancaster (Bowie/Northwestern) had five points, four rebounds and three assists while senior forward Ely Richardson (Hartford, Conn./Suffield Academy) grabbed a rebound in his ninth start and 23rd game of the season.
Ryan Hourihan totaled 18 points and 13 rebounds to lead four Sea Gulls in double figures.
Stevenson will conclude the regular season with two road games this week, including a crucial contest against Hood on Wednesday. The winner will have an edge in the race for the final playoff spot while the loser will need some help.
The Mustangs travel to Mary Washington next Saturday while Hood travels to Salisbury. Meanwhile, York concludes the regular season with back-to-back home games against Gallaudet and Marymount.
