Tawney enters his seventh season as the head baseball coach at Stevenson in 2009. During his tenure, the Mustangs have seen many positive changes including their first winning season, first conference championship appearance, first NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Championship appearance and a change from the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) to the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) in 2008 with numerous players earning both conference and regional recognition.

In 2007, Stevenson finished the season with its first-ever NCAA regional appearance, finishing the season with 24 wins. That year, the Mustangs were ranked 32nd in Division III with 7.3 strikeouts per nine innings, 49th with a .328 batting average and 65th with a 4.01 ERA. In 2002, the team led the nation in stolen bases.

Stevenson has won at least 24 games over the last three seasons, including a school record 29 victories in 2006. During that time, the Mustangs have a record of 78-58 with two NEAC regular season championships and three NEAC championship game appearances.

Tawney is a 1999 graduate of Wingate University where he graduated with honors and earned a degree in finance and was a three-year member of the Bulldogs nationally ranked baseball program.

In addition to his role as head coach at Stevenson, Tawney currently works as a financial advisor at Edward Jones Investments in Catonsville. He has also earned his Accredited Asset Management Specialist designation from Stevenson for financial planning and is the president of the Greater Catonsville Chamber of Commerce while serving on the Board of Directors for numerous non-profit organizations in the Baltimore area.

A four-year letterman and two-year captain at North Carroll High School, Tawney was named all-conference and all-county as both a junior and senior. He began his baseball career in 1991 as a member of the inaugural Carroll County Rangers. In 1994, Tawney was named offensive MVP for the 18 and under team after leading it in numerous offensive categories and being selected to the Baltimore Metro League All-Star Team.

Tawney currently resides in Catonsville with his wife Heather and their dogs, Haley, Reilly and Floyd.

 


Mark Chiveral

Title:  Senior Assistant/Pitching Coach

Mark Chiveral begins his 10th year as assistant coach at Stevenson University, having served as the pitching coach since the start of the Mustang program in 2000. During his tenure, he has developed the pitching staff as a key strength of the team.

In 2006, Chiveral's pitching staff totaled the most wins in school history with 29 while posting a 4.00 ERA. A year later, Stevenson had a 4.01 ERA as a staff in 2007 with freshman and sophomores comprising close to 75 percent of the team's 348.1 innings.

Prior to Stevenson, Chiveral served as an assistant pitching coach at Loyola College (Md.) for seven seasons.

During the summer, Chiveral serves as a player/manager for the Degroen's Baseball Club of the Baltimore Baseball League. A graduate of Patterson High School, he lettered in football and baseball and had a career pitching record of 18 wins and loss.

Chiveral attended CCBC Essex where he was the anchor of the pitching staff for two seasons.

In addition to his coaching duties, Chiveral works in the department of biostatistics at Johns Hopkins University. He and his wife, Suzanne, and daughter Madelyn, reside in Arbutus.

 


Chris Masters

Title:  Recruiting Coordinator

Chris Masters begins his first season at Stevenson in 2009, serving as the team's recruiting coordinator. He will be responsible for recruiting activities, official visits and outfield defense.

A 2007 graduate of North Carolina Wesleyan, Masters played four years for the Battling Bishops from 2004-07 while earning a bachelor of science degree in exercise science. At Wesleyan, he was a member of the 2006 NCAA Division III South Region championship team that finished the year 31-17 and advanced to the Division III World Series.

During Masters' career, he helped the Battling Bishops win a USA South tournament title, a regular season conference championship and an NCAA regional championship. Throughout his playing career, Masters has appeared in seven World Series, four of them as a player and three as a coach.

Prior to N.C. Wesleyan, Masters was a standout at Howard High School where he was a four-year starting catcher and was an all-county performer and team captain as a senior.

Masters, who is currently working on becoming a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, is an assistant strength and conditioning coach with Athletic Performance, Inc., in Millersville, Maryland.

In addition to his work at Stevenson, Masters is also on the coaching staff of the Columbia Reds of the Maryland Collegiate Baseball League, an elite wood bat summer league team for whom he once played for.

 


Nathan Roling

Nathan Roling joins the Stevenson University baseball coaching staff for his first season as the graduate assistant in 2009. His main responsibilities are to monitor the academics of the student athletes, coordinate tutoring and monitor study halls. He will also serve as the head coach for the junior varsity program, first base coach and be responsible for mentoring the catchers.

A 2008 graduate of Loras College with a bachelor's degree in sport management and business, Roling is currently working on his master's degree in business and technology management at Stevenson.

The Dubuque, Iowa native was a two-time academic All-Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection at Loras and served as a team captain for the Duhawks as a senior.

Prior to Loras, Roling spent one year at Iowa Central Community College.

Roling has an extensive background working camps and clinics as a hitting and catcher instructor. He spent the 2008 summer as the head coach for the Dubuque Wahlert High school freshman gold team.

He currently resides in Catonsville.
